The writer Haruki Murakami once described the perfect cup of coffee as being “soft like velvet.”
That same decadent softness of warmth and comfort is easy to see in Mocha Mousse, Pantone’s 2025 Color of the Year.
For me, this creamy, cocoa-inspired brown evokes the feeling of sipping a latte in the early morning, when the world is still wrapped in soft, sepia tones, just before the caffeine hits and the day springs to life.
For marketers and designers, Mocha Mousse is more than just a color. It points to the shifting tastes and priorities of consumers.
Coming out of the pandemic, there has been a renewed focus on physical and mental well-being, with home trends that promote relaxation and mindfulness gaining traction. Biophilic design — such as increased natural light, plantscaped interiors, spa-like bathrooms and cozy nooks — reflects a growing desire for comfort and connection. Homeowners are seeking ways to connect with nature by creating restorative spaces within their homes. Incorporating earthy shades into design is a proven way to cultivate tranquility.
