By now I am sure you have all heard of the new up-and-coming social network from Google called Google+. The prototype has launched, and it is in the early stages of development. It is still so new, that for now, you have to be invited to join. The commentary and blog entries on this new site are varied. It is being both praised and criticized. If you are curious and want to know more I suggest you should Google Google+.
I have done a bit of research on Google+, read a few pro and con articles, been invited by co-workers to join and have even repeatedly toured the online demonstration. If anything was going to make me sign up, it would be the online demonstration which is actually very cool. It is well written, engaging and has cool graphics that make it look like a fun online place to socialize.
However, I have absolutely no interest in joining. Somehow, I am immune to the lure and temptation of another way to communicate and share my business and/or personal life with others. I think I am a pretty typical consumer in today’s online society. I have a Twitter account, I’m using LinkedIn, I have reconnected with all of my high school friends on Facebook, I keep watch on both of my daughters’ Facebook and YouTube channels, and I constantly monitor three active email accounts. I don’t Tumblr or Flickr and never signed up to Buzz, but I do have an old, outdated MySpace page that, truthfully, I don’t visit much anymore.
With all of that (and a life), I just don’t have room in my heart for any more social network networks. Granted I am not fond of the weekly changes that Facebook makes, and I’m not thrilled by the constant threats that social media is profiting from my personal “likes,” but I am satisfied with the products I use and can’t imagine starting over again on yet another social network. Dealing with another check box for yet another social media venue just isn’t going to happen. Am I alone? I would love to hear feedback if I am the only person who has lost interest. So, check it out and let me know what you think. (And, well, you know where to find me.)
