Flip-Flop

And just like that, the Flip has flopped.

Heralded as the “next big thing” a mere five years ago, the Flip camcorder became an instant success, mainly because of its incredible ease of use. I own two of the devices – one standard, one HD – and like many other suburban parents, it was a must-have on the ball field. Instant recording. Instant sharing. What’s not to like?

What’s also not to like about the same features on practically every smartphone on the market today? My Flips went to the back of a drawer two years ago, which coincidentally was right after I powered up a new BlackBerry. Multiplied many times over, and you’ve got the demise of the Flip. You can read more about the decision by Cisco Systems to discontinue the Flip at http://yhoo.it/g6vuA6.

All told, the Flip is another casualty in the grueling pace of evolution in consumer electronics – and perhaps yet another with a smudge of Steve Jobs’ fingerprints left behind for good measure.
