Warming the Heart – One Claim at a Time

Nothing warms the heart like personally witnessing a wrong being righted.

Back in May, law students at the Charlotte School of Law helped homebuyers who were victims of fraudulent business practices acknowledged by Beazer Homes file claims totaling more than $310,000 against a fund that Beazer is supporting to provide restitution for homebuyers.

Under a deferred prosecution agreement reached last year with the U.S. District Court for the Western District of North Carolina, Beazer accepted responsibility for several fraudulent mortgage origination and accounting practices. The company agreed to pay $10 million toward a restitution fund.

CharlotteLaw students worked directly with Beazer homebuyers in April to provide them with instructions for filing claims against the fund.  There were audible gasps when homebuyers learned the amount of their claim.  The biggest claim was for $23,000; another was for $13,000 with most falling between $5,000 and $10,000.

The most heartening moments were when claimants literally danced for joy – a long-awaited release after years of pent-up frustration.
