The dreaded Fwd: message. Everyone’s inbox gets flooded with them. Most of the time they’re not really worth reading. But my Dad sent me this one the other day that absolutely fascinated me. I’d seen it before (maybe you have too), but I read it again anyway and loved it just as much. It demonstrates how incredibly powerful the machine of the mind truly is. Enjoy:
In 1982, Johnson & Johnson set the bar very high on product recalls. When tampering of its Tylenol product first came to light, the company immediately recalled all Tylenol even though the tampering was likely limited to a small geographic area. Earlier this year, however, Johnson & Johnson stumbled badly in a similar situation.
Conditions are ripe for brand flu. Companies are transparent. Customers are super vocal and social media amplifies any outrage or scandal. Everything is outsourced with time-honored brand reputations in the hands of far-flung global sources. Celebrity endorsements are less stable than ever. Meanwhile, intensive pressure to cut costs can quickly turn into cutting corners.
I just read an engaging article about a woman named Sheena Matheiken who spent one full year wearing the same little black dress each and every day. 365 days. Yet, she never let it look the same. She would add colorful tights, thigh-high boots, saris, hats or another garment or accessory, and with those simple additions would create entirely unique outfits from one day to the next. Sheena, who lives in New York, did it to raise awareness for The Arkanksha Foundation, a grassroots nonprofit that brings education to children living in Indian slums; she so far has raised nearly $77,000 ensuring that more than 200 children in her native country can go to school.
