I saw a TV spot over the holidays that didn’t just catch my attention, it stuck with me for days. But not in a good way. The commercial was promoting the BATmobile, a mobile Breathalyzer Alcohol Testing (BAT) vehicle that was funded by a grant from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.
The tone of the commercial was somewhat a parody of the 1960s TV show “Batman.” From the voiceover announcer’s “monster/truck-like” delivery, to the unmistakable “da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da” Batman theme song background, the commercial turned a very serious subject into quite the opposite. And turned my stomach as well.
The idea of a mobile alcohol testing vehicle is a good one. The idea of a light-hearted marketing and advertising campaign is not. A DUI is no laughing matter. This campaign should be pulled over, tested and cited for poor taste.
